EMORY. Va. – Former Emory & Henry College Head Men's Basketball Coach Bob Johnson has left a lasting mark on the game of basketball - not only in Southwest Virginia and in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, but the sport as a whole.
"Coach J" as he was widely known, has one of the largest coaching trees of any basketball coaches with five former assistants currently coaching at NCAA Division I schools: Mike Young, Wofford College; Jimmy Allen, Army West Point; Nathan Davis, Bucknell University; Jon Coffman, Indiana University –Purdue University Fort Wayne; and Jamion Christian, Mount St. Mary's (Maryland) University.
John Akers, publisher of Basketball Times magazine, penned a feature about the basketball community at Emory & Henry and its lasting impression across the country. The piece tells several well-known stories as well as some lesser-realized anecdotes about Johnson's career at Emory & Henry, the men who he shaped to be the next generation of coaches and his players on the court.
