FOREST, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Baseball Team has been picked to finish 11th in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference regular season, ODAC officials announced Wednesday. The poll is voted on by the head coaches of the league's baseball programs.
Under the direction of Head Coach Trey McCall, now in his 11th year, Emory & Henry posted a 7-27 (3-17 ODAC) record in 2015. The Wasps had a stretch of 17 days in which the weather prevented them from playing and later an 18 day stretch during which they played 19 games including 13 conference games.
Emory & Henry returns 18 players from last year’s squad and welcomes 22 freshmen to the fold. A strong group of returning position players are back, including all-region outfielder Brandon Lineberry (Hillsville, Va.). On the mound, the Wasps’ innings leaders from last year return in senior Aaron Sparks (Troutman, N.C.) and junior Garrett Butler (Knoxville, Tenn.). E&H has 18 pitchers on its roster this year which will provide depth and relief should the weather protest for a second year in a row.
Shenandoah University is picked to repeat as the league champion with five first-place votes and a total of 94 points. Randolph-Macon College is second (90 pts. – 4 FPV) while Virginia Wesleyan College (88 pts. – 2 FPV) is third. Bridgewater College and Roanoke College are fourth and fifth, respectively.
Emory & Henry will begin the 2016 season with a three-game series at Berry College. The season opener will be Saturday, February 6 at noon with a seven-inning doubleheader. The series will wrap up on Sunday with a single game at 1:00 p.m. The Wasps' first home games will be on Saturday, February 27 as they host Mt. Aloysius College in a pair of seven-inning games at 12:00 p.m. E&H opens ODAC play on Saturday, March 5, hosing Hampden-Sydney College. First pitch for that twin-billing is at noon.
