Emory & Henry Football Completes Spring Strength & Conditioning Program

EMORY, Va. – During the winter and the spring practice season, the members of the Emory & Henry College Football Team got a lot stronger. Under the direction of Assistant Football Coach and Strength & Conditioning Coach Josh Nelson, the Wasps used a new format for workouts to focus on power development and functional strength.

"Throughout the winter and spring phase, we first worked toward neuromuscular recruitment and then transitioned to our strength and power phases with the use of Olympic and conventional movements as well as our year-long plyometric program," said Nelson of the new strength & conditioning program. "Through the use of our Wasp Human Movement Initiative, which includes speed and agility modalities, kinesthetic awareness concepts, and sport specific conditioning, our athletes have been able to realize incredible improvements in functional ability that will help us immensely during the fall."

During this time, the Wasps logged new personal maximums in three different weightlifting disciplines: bench press, squat, and hang clean. Twenty-four members of the team lifted an aggregate of over 1,000 pounds across the three disciplines, thereby earning the designation of 1,000-Pound Club. The top 10 lifters in each of the three disciplines and the members of the 1,000-Pound Club are listed below.

Emory & Henry will begin its fall practice season on Friday, August 16 and will have its first test on the gridiron on Saturday, September 7 when it hosts Ferrum College at Fred Selfe Stadium with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
