EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College junior defensive end Da'von Keith has been selected as a Preseason First Team All-American by HEROSports.com. The Columbia, South Carolina native is one of two players from the Old Dominion Athletic Conference to receive the honor.
"It feels great for all the hard work to finally pay off and to see everyone else recognize the dedication that I put into the game of football. I am truly thankful for this recognition," commented Keith. "I want to continue where I left off last season and get a lot the young guys into our system so that we can carry the weight with our depth. We hope that we don't just finish the year on a five-game winning streak, but with a spot in the playoffs and a championship."
Keith is coming off a 2016 season in which he was named to the All-ODAC First Team, the VaSID College Division All-State First Team, the Roanoke Times All-State First Team and the D3football.com All-South Region Third Team.
"It's a great honor for Da'von as a player, he is a joy to have around from a coach's perspective," commented Assistant Coach Eric Tilson, who leads the Wasps' defensive line. "He is responsible in everything he does and when you have players like that it makes you a better coach. I am very fortunate to coach a player and a person of his caliber."
The ODAC Defensive Player of the Week for Week Eight in 2016, Keith was second on the team with 66 tackles on the year, led the league with 12 sacks and 23 tackles for loss and added a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. He earned weekly honors from the ODAC after a 14-tackle, three-sack performance which saw the Wasps defeat the Eagles of Bridgewater College by a 42-33 score.
The Emory & Henry Football Team will open the 2017 season at Fred Self Stadium on Saturday, September 2 against Ferrum College in the Crooked Road Classic. Kickoff between the Wasps and Panthers is set for 1:00 p.m. The contest will also serve as the College's annual Hall of Fame Day.
