ABINGDON, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Athletic Department held the Fifth Annual I-HEY Golf Tournament at Glenrochie Country Club in Abingdon on Monday, June 4. A total of $22,379 was raised for the I-HEY Fund as 72 golfers participated in the event.
Mod-U-Kraf Homes was the tournament’s title sponsor for the first time. The Rocky Mount, Virginia company is currently in the process of helping E&H build its second of three new residence halls. Hickory Hall, which is scheduled to open later this year, will be the first building of its kind in the United States. Mod-U-Kraf also built the units for Elm Hall, which was opened to students in the fall of 2010.
Winning the tournament was the team of Doris Shuman, Kenny Shuman, Adam Rohrig and Lewis Spicer as they shot a 63 on the 6,300-yard, par-72 course to finish at -9 on the day.
Also carding a 63 was Jim Thompson, Bill King and Dan Clotfelter. The threesome took second place after a scorecard tiebreaker was used to determine the champion.
Finishing third with a round of 64 (-8) was the Mod-U-Kraf team of John Fields, Justin Forry, Jeff Powell and Jack Grazinski.
Other award winners included Brett Sample for longest drive, Rhea Shelton for closest to the pin and Pam Gourley for longest putt.
I-HEY is the official fundraising arm of Emory & Henry College’s athletic department. For more than 50 years, alumni and friends have supported athletic programs at E&H by joining I-HEY (I Help Every Year). Contributions help teams purchase equipment and pay for travel to and from competition. Emory & Henry is a member of the NCAA’s Division III, therefore no athletic scholarships are granted to student-athletes. Gifts earmarked to I-HEY or to any one of the Wasps’ 13 intercollegiate athletic teams help young men and women become leaders on the field and court as well as in the classroom.
