EMORY, Va. – The Newberry College Baseball Team (21-19, 10-15 SAC) started its South Atlantic Conference weekend series with Emory & Henry University (12-28, 4-18 SAC) with a 5-3 win Saturday afternoon.

How It Happened
Newberry got on the board in the top of the first when Parker Mergo scored from first on a stolen base and a throwing error. The Wolves made it a 2-0 contest in the top of the fourth when Wilson Wages drove in Kade Faircloth with a single up the middle.
In the top of the seventh, Newberry pushed its lead to 5-0 with a three-run home run to left field by Chandler Mims.
The Wasps loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Fifth-year outfielder Triston Hensley (Covington, Va.) hit a two-run double down the right field line to make it a 5-2 contest. On the next at bat, junior Ky Gregoire (Warterloo, Ontario, CANADA) plated fifth-year designated hitter Caeden Howell (Roaring River, N.C.) with a groundout, closing the gap to 5-3. E&H's rally would stall out as the Wolves came away with the victory.
Cole Chansen earned the win for the Wolves, striking out nine in seven shutout innings while allowing just two hits. Brayden Gilson earned the save, pitching the final two outs of the contest. Wasp junior Jacob Nester (Hillsville, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.

Emory & Henry will close out the series against the Wolves with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon.
