UVA Wise Baseball Downs Emory & Henry In Both Games Of SAC Doubleheader Saturday

WISE, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Baseball Team (2-5, 1-2 SAC) dropped both ends of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to Southwest Virginia rival the University of Virginia's College at Wise (4-2, 2-1 SAC) Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers took game one by a 17-10 scoreline, before shutting out the Wasps 7-0 in the nightcap.

Game One - UVA Wise 17, Emory & Henry 10
The Wasps wasted no time breaking through on the scoreboard in game one of the doubleheader as sophomore shortstop Jaret Hoppes (Taylorsville, N.C.) and junior outfielder Jadden Rodriguez (Thomasville, N.C.) led off with a single and a double to put a pair in scoring position. Junior designated hitter Kyle Fields (Lynchburg, Va.) unloaded his third home run of the year to put E&H up 3-0 early. Wise would put up one run in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-1.

E&H struck again in the top of the third as Rodriguez reached on an error, sophomore outfielder Carter Lyons (Harrisburg, N.C.) doubled and sophomore outfielder Rhett Barker (Charlotte, N.C.) plated both runners with a two-RBI double to run the Wasps' advantage out to 5-1. Emory & Henry tacked on another run in the top of the fourth on an RBI sacrifice fly from senior third baseman Drew Park (Mooresville, N.C.) to run the score to 6-1. Wise erupted for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.

The Cavaliers would take their first lead of the contest in the fifth with two more runs on the back of four hits to give them the 8-6 advantage. E&H struck back in the top of the sixth on an RBI double from Fields to draw back within a run at 8-7. The back-and-forth game continued in the seventh as the Wasps added three more as Barker roped a three-run bomb over the wall in left and the visitors from Emory led once more, 10-8. The Wise bats exploded for seven runs on six hits in the home half of the seventh to put them firmly in the lead. The Cavaliers added two more insurance runs in the eighth to clinch the 17-10 win.

Game Two - UVA Wise 7, Emory & Henry 0 (Seven Innings)
The Cavaliers jumped on the Wasps early in game two of the doubleheader, scoring three times on a pair of hits in the bottom of the first inning. Both teams were kept scoreless in the second, but Wise struck for three more on three hits in the bottom of the third to take firm control of the game at 6-0. The Wasps' bats were kept silent for the majority of the contest as the visitors were limited to just three total hits. The Cavaliers would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth as they cruised to the 7-0 victory.

The Wasps make a return trip to Bristol, Tennessee on Tuesday, February 17 when they travel to take on border rival King (Tenn.) University for the second time in a week. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from the King Baseball Field.
