Carson-Newman Baseball Takes Both Ends Of SAC Doubleheader From Emory & Henry Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Baseball Team (6-18, 3-12 SAC) fell in both games of a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader to Carson-Newman University (14-11, 6-9 SAC) Saturday afternoon. The Eagles shutout the Wasps for a 12-0 win in game one, before edging E&H by a 5-3 margin in game two.

Game One - Carson-Newman 12, Emory & Henry 0
The Eagles jumped ahead in the top of the first inning as Cole Nathan laced a three-run, inside-the-park home run to put C-N ahead 3-0. Carson-Newman would go on to add one in the fourth, two in the sixth and six in the ninth to earn the 12-0 shutout victory.

Christian Henderson picked up the win on the hill for the Eagles as he went all nine innings, allowing just three hits while fanning seven E&H batters. Junior Drew Lanzo (Indian Trail, N.C.) took the loss for the Wasps after surrendering six runs, three earned, on seven hits over five innings on the mound. Junior first baseman Kyle Fields (Lynchburg, Va.), senior third baseman Drew Park (Mooresville, N.C.) and freshman outfielder Jase Kotwicki (Harrisburg, N.C.) accounted for the three hits for Emory & Henry.

Game Two - Carson-Newman 5, Emory & Henry 3 (Seven Innings)
Carson-Newman put up three runs in the top of the second inning for their second 3-0 lead in as many games. The Eagles would go on to add two more in the top of the fifth to grow their advantage to 5-0. The Wasps were kept off of the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh. 

Junior third baseman Jeriel Lamboy (Caguas, PUERTO RICO) reached on a walk and senior outfielder Isaiah Bracy (Henrico, Va.) was hit by a pitch. Kotwicki followed two batters later with an RBI single to plate Lamboy and cut the deficit to 5-1. Sophomore shortstop Jaret Hoppes (Taylorsville, N.C.) reached on a bunt single and a throwing error by the C-N catcher allowed Bracy to score and the runners to move up a base. Junior outfielder Jadden Rodriguez (Thomasville, N.C.) plated Kotwicki with an RBI single and the score stood at 5-3. Fields launched a long fly ball to left field, but it came up just short and the Eagles escaped with the 5-3 win. 

Kolton Casson was the winning pitcher for Carson-Newman as he threw six shutout innings, allowing just four hits while striking out eight batters. Sophomore righty Cole Gillis (Charlotte, N.C.) suffered the loss, giving up five runs, two earned on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts over six innings on the mound. Fields finished with a pair of hits while Hoppes, Rodriguez, Kotwicki and junior second baseman Ryan Paynton (Walnut Creek, Calif.) had a hit each.

Emory & Henry wraps up its homestand on Tuesday, March 17 with a doubleheader against the Big Blue of Bluefield State University. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Porterfield-DeVault Field.
