Late Wasps’ Rally Comes Up Short At Lincoln Memorial Wednesday

HARROGATE, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry University Men's Lacrosse Team (1-6, 0-2 SAC) rallied late, but eventually fell on the road in South Atlantic Conference play to Lincoln Memorial University (5-3, 2-2 SAC) Wednesday afternoon. The Wasps trailed by just one after the first quarter and outscored the Railsplitters 5-2 in the third, but their comeback came up just short by a 15-9 margin.

How It Happened
- Emory & Henry opened the scoring at the 11:49 mark of the first when sophomore midfielder Caleb Mims (Kingsport, Tenn.) dished to freshman defender Lukas Cook (Kill Devil Hills, N.C.) who beat the LMU goalie to make it 1-0. The Wasps doubled their lead two and a half minutes later on a goal by freshman attack Gavin Starling (McKinney, Texas) assisted by fellow freshman Dany Nguyen (Forest, Va.) to make it 2-0. LMU tied the contest with back-to-back goals, but E&H responded at the 6:23 mark when junior attack Jacob Mills (Culpeper, Va.) scored unassisted to push the Wasps back in front 3-2. The Railsplitters tallied the final two goals of the quarter to run the score to 4-3 in favor of the home team at the end of 15 minutes.
- The Wasps were first on the board in the second quarter when freshman defender Brayden Hall (Salem, Va.) created a moment of magic with 12:40 on the clock as he cashed in on a goal from past the midfield stripe for the second time this season to knot the score once more at 4-4. Lincoln Memorial's offense would come to life over the rest of the quarter, putting up six unanswered goals to give them the 10-4 lead heading into the half.
- Mills got E&H back on the scoreboard just 27 seconds into the second half with an unassisted goal to pull E&H back within five at 10-5. After an LMU goal, sophomore David Mewes (Greenville, S.C.) joined the party with an unassisted score of his own to reduce the deficit to 11-6. The Railsplitters made it 12-6 90 seconds later, but the E&H offense would finish the quarter with a flourish. Nguyen recorded a goal, Mills followed 90 seconds after him and Nguyen scored his second of the game with 2:18 left in the period to close the gap to just three at 12-9 heading into the final frame.
- It was all LMU in the fourth as the homestanding Railsplitters registered the lone three goals of the quarter to take the 15-9 victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Mills led the offense with a trio of goals and a caused turnover while Nguyen had two goals and an assist. Hall finished with a goal, one ground ball and a pair of caused turnovers.
- Sophomore defender Isaiah Ward (Fredericksburg, Va.) forced a team-high three turnovers and collected three ground balls. Freshman midfielder Ty Holt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) had a team-high five ground balls and a caused turnover while sophomore faceoff Jaxon Blackshear (Hedgesville, W.Va.) went for four ground balls.
- Sophomore goalie Mason Buttery (Carmel, Ind.) made eight saves in goal while freshman goalie AJ Cakir (McKinney, Texas) recorded 11 saves in relief to increase his save percentage to a SAC-leading 58.3%.

Lincoln Memorial Individual Leaders
- Gavin Reid led all scorers as he finished with a game-high five goals, one assist and a ground ball. Jenson Jones had four goals and a caused turnover while Domenico Moscato and Lucas Barsauskas went for a pair of goals each.
- Connor Fitzgibbon made eight saves to earn the win while Tristian Krieger collected a trio of saves in relief.

- Emory & Henry returns home this Saturday, March 21 when the Wasps host No. 8 nationally-ranked Newberry College. Faceoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from the Food City Sports Complex.
