Emory & Henry Men’s Soccer Selected Seventh In Preseason Poll

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Emory & Henry University Men's SoccerTeam has been picked to finish in seventh place in the South Atlantic Conference this year by the league's head coaches. The poll was released by the SAC office on Tuesday. It is the first year for the Wasps under new Head Coach Ali Al-Gashamy, and also the highest preseason ranking for the program since E&H's move to the Division II ranks.

Lenoir-Rhyne University is picked to win the league with two first-place votes. Wingate University is second in the poll with three top nods while Coker is third with three first-place picks. Mars Hill rounds out the top four with one first-place selection.

Additionally, the SAC has announced its Preseason All-Conference Men's Soccer Team, with a pair of Wasps earning the honor. Sophomore goalkeeper Nikolaj Bertelsen (Vejle, DENMARK) and sophomore midfielder Marcelo Lopes (Sao Paulo, BRAZIL) have both been selected to the squad. 

Bertelsen is in his first year at E&H after transferring from former SAC opponent Limestone University. As a freshman he started all 20 games for the Saints in net, finishing with a 14-1-3 record while recording 53 saves and a .803 save percentage with 11 total shutouts. For his efforts Bertelsen was selected to the All-SAC First Team, United Soccer Coaches Division II All-Southeast Region First Team and D2CCA Southeast All-Region First Team. Lopes is another transfer from Limestone in his first season as a Wasp. He was a Second Team-All-SAC selection that appeared in 19 games, making 12 starts as a freshman. He finished with two assists and scored the game-winning goal at Anderson (S.C.). Freshman midfielder Noah Serwy (Liege, BELGIUM) has also been named as a player to watch for the 2025 season. 

Emory & Henry gets the 2025 regular season underway on Thursday, September 4 at Southern Wesleyan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from Childs Field in Central, South Carolina.
