Emory & Henry Men’s Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision To Southern Wesleyan In Season Opener

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Emory & Henry University Men's Soccer Team (0-1) dominated the box score as they held an advantage in the majority of statistical categories, but could not find the back of the net as the Wasps fell to Southern Wesleyan University (1-0) to open the 2025 regular season Thursday evening. The Warriors scored once in the first half and added another in the second stanza to take the 2-0 victory.

How It Happened
- The Wasps were the aggressors offensively from the get-go as the visitors from Emory outshot the homestanding Warriors 7-0 in the opening 23 minutes of play, but could not convert those chances into a goal. Southern Wesleyan opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Matias Garnier headed home a cross from Michael Boyle on a corner kick to put SWU ahead 1-0. E&H created chances throughout the remainder of the period, but the score stood at 1-0 in favor of the Warriors heading into the half.
- Emory & Henry began the second half firing three more shots in the direction of the Southern Wesleyan goal in the first four minutes of the frame, but still could not get on the scoreboard. The Warriors added to their lead in the 53rd minute when Josiah Pitts slotted a shot into the corner of the goal, assisted by Luis Lezama and Gabriel Melendez to push the margin out to 2-0. The Wasps outshot SWU by a 20-5 margin for the game, but the Warriors were up to the task defensively as they held on for the 2-0 shutout victory. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior forward Matheus Ulrich Da Silva (Balneario Camboriu, BRAZIL) led the Wasps with eight total shots, three on goal. Freshman forward Jean-Charles Eyidi (Briollay, FRANCE) finished with two shots, both on frame, while freshman midfielder Milan Ales (Le Cres, FRANCE) and junior midfielder Lander Barrio Gonzalez (Otañes, SPAIN) each had a pair of attempts.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Nikolaj Bertelsen (Vejle, DENMARK) recorded two saves in goal for the Wasps.

Southern Wesleyan Individual Leaders
- Garnier and Pitts registered the two goals for the Warriors on just one shot each.
- Luke Bramblett made five saves to earn the win for Southern Wesleyan.

- The Wasps open up their 2025 home slate on Sunday, September 7 when they play host to the Hawks of Chowan University. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. from the Food City Sports Complex.
