Wasps Draw Catawba, 1-1, To Wrap Up Homecoming Weekend

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Men's Soccer Team (5-3-3, 4-1-2 SAC) battled through the elements for 90 minutes, but had to settle for a draw against Catawba College (4-4-3, 1-3-3 SAC) inside the Food City Sports Complex Sunday evening. The two teams finished deadlocked at 1-1 at the end of regulation.

The Basics
FINAL SCORE – Emory & Henry 1, Catawba 1
LOCATION – Emory, Virginia
VENUE – Food City Sports Complex
RECORDS – Emory & Henry (5-3-3, 4-1-2 SAC); Catawba (4-4-3, 1-3-3 SAC)

How It Happened
- Catawba wasted no time creating a scoring chance as a foul inside the box in the second minute gave the Catawba Indians a chance for an early lead. Lukas Garcia-Huidobro's penalty kick was no good to keep things level at 0-0. E&H's first chance came in the 16th minute when senior forward Matheus Ulrich Da Silva (Balneario Camboriu, BRAZIL) fired a shot on goal that was saved. Freshman defender Milan Ales (Le Cres, FRANCE) had an attempt that was parried away in the 35th to keep things all square. The Wasps broke through in the 39th minute when Ales dodged the Catawba defense and played a square ball to junior forward Mila Mzamane (Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA), who finished past the Catawba keeper to give Emory & Henry a narrow 1-0 advantage at the break.
- Neither team could change the scoreline through the first 30 minutes of the second half, but Catawba tied things up in the 77th minute. A handball gave the Catawba Indians their second penalty kick of the night and this time Adriano Melo converted from the spot to level the score at 1-1. That would be Melo's last meaningful contribution of the night as he was issued a pair of yellow cards over the following four minutes to end his game early. The Wasps cranked up the pressure offensively with the man advantage and saw another Catawba player sent off in the 85th minute. Ales had another pop in the direction of the Catawba goal in the 88th minute, but it was off target and the teams had to settle for the draw.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Ales, Ulrich Da Silva and freshman forward Samuel Ulrich (Balneario Camboriu, BRAZIL) led the Wasps with a pair of shots each. Mzamane recorded his third goal of the year with his lone attempt.
- Junior goalkeeper Baptiste Berthozat (Saint-Martin-de-Crau, FRANCE) registered three saves in net for Emory & Henry

Catawba Individual Leaders
- Tomas Kelly paced Catawba with a match-high three shots before he was sent off in the 88th minute. Luis Rodrigues had two shots while four other Catawba Indians finished with an attempt.
- Hector Vara made four saves in between the pipes for the visitors to earn the share of the spoils.
