Emory & Henry Softball Splits With Newberry Saturday On The Road

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Emory & Henry University Softball Team (27-17, 8-10 SAC) picked up a South Atlantic Conference split against Newberry College (21-24, 9-9 SAC) Saturday afternoon on the road. The Wolves won game one, 7-0, while the Wasps posted a come-from-behind 8-7 win in game two to salvage the split.

Game One – Newberry 7, Emory & Henry 0
The Wolves got the scoring started in the bottom of the first on a solo home run by Haidyn Campbell. Newberry pushed the lead to 2-0 in the second on a RBI groundout by Payton Little.

In the fifth, the Wolves extended their advantage to 4-0 as Ella Stone and Little drove in runs with base knocks. Newberry capped the scoring with three more runs in the sixth highlighted by a two-run single through the left side by Mady Brown.

Lindsey Foster earned the shutout for the Wolves, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out three. E&H sophomore Destiny Good (Staunton, Va.) suffered the loss, allowing seven runs on 13 hits and three walks with two strikeouts.

Game Two – Emory & Henry 8, Newberry 7
Newberry pushed four across in the bottom of the second to take an early lead, highlighted by a Katie Henri home run. The Wolves made it a 6-0 contest when Campbell tagged a two-run shot to centerfield.

Emory & Henry responded in the fifth as freshman designated player Liberty Johnson (Arvonia, Va.) homered to left field and senior first baseman Lydia Taylor (Salem, Va.) drove in sophomore left fielder Karsen Simpson (Salisbury, N.C.) with a sacrifice fly to make it a 6-2 contest.

The Wasps exploded for six runs in the sixth as senior right fielder Danielle King (Spencer, Va.) had a two-run single, Taylor drove in one with a base knock up the middle and sophomore third baseman Tristyn Tofano (Roanoke, Va.) hit a three-run blast to right-center for an 8-6 advantage.

The Wolves got one run back in the sixth on a double by Samantha Clark but would get no closer than the final 8-7 margin.

Wasp junior Malorie Reeves (Galax, Va.) earned the win, permitting seven runs on nine hits with four strikeouts and two walks. NBY's Natalie Wescott took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits with for strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

Emory & Henry returns home on Wednesday to host Carson-Newman University. First pitch between the Wasps and Eagles is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
