The Basics
GAME ONE – Emory & Henry 1, Mars Hill 4
GAME TWO – Emory & Henry 4, Mars Hill 6
LOCATION – Mars Hill, North Carolina
VENUE – Ponder Field
RECORDS – Emory & Henry (17-11, 3-3 SAC); Mars Hill (22-6, 3-1 SAC)
Game One – Emory & Henry 1, Mars Hill 4
It was a back and forth contest through the first two innings. Mars Hill took the lead off of a Sydney Hodges RBI single. The Wasps had bases loaded in the top of the 2nd, a Rachel Hill (Stanardsville, Va.) RBI single brought in Liberty Johnson (Arvonia, Va.) to tie the game at 1 run a piece. Neither offense was able to get anything going in the middle innings thanks to Malorie Reeves (Galax, Va.) and Mars Hill's Kamryn Akins. The Lions broke through in the bottom of the 6th with a 3 RBI double that would give them the lead for good. The E&H bats fell cold in the final frame, and saw Mars Hill come out on top in Game 1 of the doubleheader.
Game Two – Emory & Henry 4, Mars Hill 6
The Wasps began Game 2 on the front foot with a 2 run home run from Sawyer Tolley (Bedford, Va.) in the top of the 1st to give E&H the early lead. Mars Hill scored runs in the bottom of the 1st and 2nd innings to take the lead 3-2 through 2. E&H loaded the bases in the top of the 3rd but would strand all 3 runners as their offense stalled.
The Lions broke through in the bottom of the 3rd, scoring 2 more runs to scratch the advantage to 5-2. Emory & Henry responded in a big way in the top of the 4th with back to back solo home runs from Kylie Cundiff (Roanoke, Va.) and Greenly Elliott (Danville, Va.) their 4th and 2nd home runs of the year respectively. This forced the Lions to make a pitching change, but the Wasps would strand 2 runners in base to end the inning down by just one.
In the top of the 5th, the Wasps managed to load the bases with a walk each from Tolley, Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.), and Cundiff. But that would be as close as they would get, the offense stalled and left all 3 runners on base. Mars Hill added another run in the bottom of the 5th for a 6-4 lead. E&H's offense would fall short in the top of the 6th and 7th innings to secure the 6-4 victory for the Lions. The Wasps left 10 total runners on base in Game 2, while getting 6 hits and scoring 4 runs.
