JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. – The Emory & Henry University Softball Team (24-20, 8-10 SAC) fell short in both games against the Eagles. The Wasps now stand in a 3 way tie for 6th in the conference standings and turn their sights to a weekend conference series against Tusculum.
The Basics
GAME ONE – Emory & Henry 2, Carson-Newman 6
GAME TWO – Emory & Henry 4, Carson-Newman 6
LOCATION – Jefferson City, Tennessee
VENUE – Vickie Kazee-Hollifield Softball Complex
RECORDS – Emory & Henry (24-20 8-10 SAC); #23 Carson-Newman (37-8 16-4 SAC)
Game One – Emory & Henry 2, Carson-Newman 6
Carson-Newman came out of the gate swinging in the bottom of the 1st. The Eagles pushed across 4 runs to take an early lead. The home team continued their momentum into the 2nd with a 2 RBI single up the middle. The score stood through the middle innings as both defenses controlled their respective side's bats.
The Wasps broke through in the top of the 6th inning with a Sawyer Tolley (Bedford, Va.) solo home run to lead off the inning. Tristyn Tofano (Roanoke, Va.) kept the rally going with a ground rule double to right center. A couple batters later Karsen Simpson (Salisbury, N.C.) hit a double of her own to right center, trading places with Tofano and cutting further into the lead making it 6-2. That would be as close as Emory & Henry would get, falling in Game 1 6-2.
Game Two – Emory& Henry 4, Carson-Newman 6
The Wasps had chances to score runs early in Game 2. Liberty Johnson (Arvonia, Va.) and Tofano both managed to advance to scoring position but would be stranded. E&H struck first with a 3 run volley in the top of the 3rd inning. Rache Hill (Stanardsville, Va.) moved into scoring position off a wild pitch and right on cue Abigail Street (Glade Spring, Va.) laced a double into left field for the RBI.
There's a new home run leader in the South Atlantic Conference, Tolley launched a 2 run shot right down the left field line to move solely into first place atop the home run list. One inning later the Wasps struck again with an RBI single from Street that brought in Kali Cook (Elkin, N.C.) for the 4-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the Wasps defense could only keep the 23rd ranked Eagles on the ground for so long. Caron-Newman came alive in the bottom of the 4th, cutting the lead in half 4-2. Then in the bottom of the 6th pushed across 4 more runs to take the lead and never looked back, finishing the game with a 6-4 final score.
