Wasps Blast Southern Wesleyan, 82-62, In SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge Opener

CENTRAL, S.C. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (1-0) got the season started on Friday evening in the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Challenge on the campus of Southern Wesleyan University. The Wasps ran out to a 47-22 halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way for the 82-62 victory.

How It Happened
- The Wasps wasted no time, as a jumper from junior Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) gave them an early 12-3 lead just four minutes into the contest. E&H continued to increase their advantage and a made three pointer by freshman forward Hali Harris (Richmond, Va.) made it a 21-8 margin. A layup from sophomore guard Tori West (Richmond, Va.) just before the buzzer gave E&H the 12-point lead after the first quarter.
- Emory & Henry picked up where it left off to begin the second quarter, going on a 19-4 run over the first seven minutes to establish a dominant 42-15 lead. The Warriors made a pair of buckets just before the break, but the Wasps outscored the home team 24-11 in the period for the 47-22 halftime advantage.
- E&H continued its hot shooting to start the third quarter, scoring the first seven points of the frame capped off by a layup from sophomore guard Lyndie Ramsey (Elizabethton, Tenn.) to give the Wasps their largest advantage of the game at 54-22. The teams traded blows throughout the rest of the quarter and the visitors from Emory held a 71-40 lead heading into the final stanza.
- Southern Wesleyan came to life in the final quarter, outscoring Emory & Henry 22-11, but it was far too late, as the Wasps cruised to the 82-62 victory. 

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Ramsey paced the Wasps' offensive attack with a game-high 23 points, eight rebounds and an assist. Junior forward Paige Niethammer (Parrotsville, Tenn.) had 16 points, five rebounds, one steal and a blocked shot while graduate student forward Breanna Yarber (Meadowview, Va.) added a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and a steal.
- Harris finished with six points, two rebounds and an assist while Hall contributed four points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block. West chipped in with six points, two assists and a pair of steals. 

Southern Wesleyan Individual Leaders
- Peyton Looky posted 17 points, three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists while Savanna Nicholson went for 14 points and a steal.
- Makayla Raines registered 12 points and three rebounds for the Warriors in the loss. 

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 51.6 percent (32-for-62) from the field, hitting four three-pointers. The Wasps went 14-for-22 (63.6%) at the free throw line.
- Southern Wesleyan made just 21-of-73 (28.8%) of their shots and were 7-for-30 (23.3%) from long range. The Warriors made 72.2 percent (13-of-18) of their free throws.
- E&H held a big 51-37 rebounding advantage and led 16-10 on second-chance points.
- The Wasps dominated the Warriors, 46-16, on points in the paint and 36-26 on bench points.
- Southern Wesleyan led 21-12 on points off turnovers, taking advantage of 28 E&H miscues.
