Emory & Henry Women's Basketball Falls, 69-60, On The Road At UVA Wise Wednesday

WISE, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (3-5, 1-2 SAC) fell on the road in South Atlantic Conference action to Southwest Virginia rival the University of Virginia's College at Wise (6-2, 3-0 SAC) Wednesday night. The Wasps battled back from a nine-point halftime deficit, but eventually came up short by a 69-60 final scoreline.

How It Happened
- The Cavaliers began the game on the front foot as they took an early 11-5 lead. E&H responded with a 10-4 run over the following three minutes and back-to-back threes from freshman guard Kinley Painter (Johnson City, Tenn.) and redshirt freshman guard Dot Mills (Canton, N.C.) tied the game up at 15-15. Wise would knock down a pair of free throws to take a 20-18 advantage into the second quarter.
- The Wasps surged ahead to begin the second quarter, utilizing a 13-4 rally capped off by a layup by junior guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) to take a 31-22 lead with 5:40 remaining in the half. The Emory & Henry offense would go ice cold for the rest of the frame as Wise finished on an 18-0 run to take a 40-31 margin into the locker room at halftime.
- The teams continued to trade runs to begin the third quarter and the Wasps scored 17 of the first 21 points of the half to retake the lead at 48-44 with 5:26 to play in the stanza. The back-and-forth play continued throughout, and the Cavaliers clung to a narrow 52-49 score heading into the fourth.
- The Cavaliers pushed their advantage out to 60-51 to begin the fourth, but once again the Wasps clawed back as they managed to pull back within four at 60-56 on a pair of free throws from junior forward Paige Niethammer (Parrottsville, Tenn.). That was as close as Emory & Henry would get however, as Wise made all of their attempts from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the 69-60 victory. 

Emory & Henry Leaders
- Niethammer paced the Wasps' offensive attack with 23 points, three rebounds and a steal. Harris just missed out on a double-double with 10 points, nine boards, four assists and three steals.
- Sophomore guard Lyndie Ramsey (Elizabethton, Tenn.) finished with nine points, nine rebounds and an assist while Painter added nine points, three rebounds and an assist off of the bench.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Carolina Mullins led all players with a double-double of 28 points, 10 rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and an assist. Madison Looney went for 12 points, four helpers and a rebound.
- Jalie Ruehling collected 11 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and a pair of assists for the Cavaliers in the win. 

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 33.3 percent (21-for-63) from the field, hitting seven three-pointers (31.8%). The Wasps went 11-for-14 (78.6%) at the free throw line.
- UVA Wise made 26-of-64 (40.6%) of their shots and was 5-for-19 (26.3%) from deep. The Cavaliers converted 80.0 percent (12-of-15) of their free throws.
- E&H outrebounded the Cavaliers 47-37, but Wise outscored the Wasps 14-11 on second chance points.
- UVA Wise won the turnover battle, forcing 20 compared to committing just 10.
- The Cavaliers forced the ball inside as they recorded 38 points in the painted area while the Wasps had 26.
- UVA Wise recorded 19 assists on their made baskets compared to 10 for Emory & Henry.
- The contest saw eight ties and 16 lead changes.

- Emory & Henry returns home on Saturday, December 13 when the Wasps host Newberry College. Tip is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. as the first part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
