Virginia State Women’s Basketball Downs Emory & Henry, 74-53, Saturday In Non-Conference Action

ETTRICK, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Basketball Team (3-9) dropped a road non-conference game to Virginia State University (8-3) Saturday afternoon. E&H outscored the home team in three of the four quarters, but the Trojans utilized a 27-0 third to top the Wasps by the 74-53 final margin.

How It Happened
- The Trojans were first on the board to begin the game, but the Wasps answered back with threes from redshirt freshman guard Dot Mills (Canton, N.C.) and junior forward Gracyn Hall (Randleman, N.C.) followed by five consecutive points from junior guard Rhyan Harris (Salem, Va.) to establish an 11-2 advantage. VSU slowly worked its way back into the game, and the Wasps clung to a narrow 21-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Virginia State put up four quick points to take the lead to begin the second frame, but E&H went on an 8-0 run capped off by a three from sophomore guard Tori West (Richmond, Va.) to jump back ahead 29-23 with 5:44 remaining in the half. The two squads traded buckets down the stretch of the opening half and the visitors from Emory held a 37-33 lead heading into the locker room at the halftime break.
- VSU came to life in the third frame as the Trojans shot 57.9% (11-for-19) during the quarter to put up 27 points while keeping the Wasps off of the scoreboard en route to a 60-37 lead heading into the fourth.
- Emory & Henry bounced back in the fourth quarter as the Wasps outscored the Trojans by a 16-14 margin, but came up on the losing end of the 74-53 decision. 

Emory & Henry Leaders
- West led the Wasps offensively with 12 points, four rebounds and a steal while freshman forward Hali Harris (Richmond, Va.) added 11 points, three rebounds, one steal and a block off of the bench.
- Hall finished with seven points, four boards and a steal. Mills recorded five points, seven rebounds, six assists and a trio of steals.

Virginia State Individual Leaders
- Maya Ellis led all scorers with 18 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Kendahl Spearman went for 14 points, two rebounds, one assist and a steal.
- Tamia Darden collected 10 points, four boards, two steals and an assist while Skylar White had 10 points, three helpers and a steal in the win for the Trojans. 

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry was 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the field, hitting eight three-pointers (33.3%). The Wasps went 7-for-14 (50.0%) at the free throw line.
- Virginia State shot 30-of-74 (40.5%) overall and was 6-for-17 (35.3%) from deep. The Trojans converted just 47.1 percent (8-of-17) of their free throws.
- VSU outrebounded E&H 44-35, and held a 15-4 advantage on second chance points.
- Virginia State won the turnover battle, forcing 29 Wasp miscues compared to committing 18. The home team capitalized on the miscues for 38 points off turnovers, while the Wasps could manage 11.
- VSU forced the ball inside as they outscored the Wasps by a 44-20 margin.
