Emory & Henry Men’s Wrestling Gets 2025-26 Season Underway At Pioneer Open Saturday

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Emory & Henry University Men's Wrestling Team opened the 2025-26 season at the Pioneer Open hosted by Glenville State University Saturday. The Wasps had 10 athletes compete over seven weight classes and finished 12th out of the field of 14 teams. Junior Sebastian Gabarrete (Jefferson, Va.) placed fourth at 165 pounds, E&H's first placement at a tournament at the Division II level.

125 Pounds
- Freshman Landen Wilson (West Jefferson, N.C.) was pinned in 41 seconds by UNC Pembroke's Joseph Bruscino in the opening round. He bounced back with a victory by fall in 4:15 over Devin Fowler of Salem (W.Va.) in his first consolation bout. He bowed out of the competition with a loss by fall to Millersville's Zachary McFarlane in the following consolation round. 

149 Pounds
- Freshman Luke Osborne (Crumpler, N.C.) dropped a tough 11-8 decision to Dylan Knight of Salem (W.Va.) in his first bout of the afternoon. He was then pinned by Millersville's Michael Volek in 1:44 in his first bout of the consolation round.
- Junior Gavin Warner (Draper, Va.) was defeated by fall in 2:37 of his opening round bout against Brayden Deem of UIndy. Warner was then pinned in 2:02 by Ashland's Enzo Fourrmann in his first consolation bout.

157 Pounds
- Fifth-year Levi Field (Manassas, Va.) lost by a 19-2 technical fall to Glenville State's Jimmie Bailes in the opening round, before dropping another 19-1 technical fall against Jim Green of Fairmont State in his first consolation bout.

165 Pounds
- Freshman Waylon Holt (Jefferson City, Tenn.) was pinned in 4:24 by UNC Pembroke's Kody Sigmon in the first bout of his afternoon. Holt received a bye to the second round of the consolation bracket where he was defeated by fall in 2:06 by Mat McNeil of Davis & Elkins.
- Gabarrete opened his day with a win by fall in 1:43 over UIndy's Duncan Hand. He then followed up with another pin in his second round bout over Seth Wayland of Frostburg State. Gabarrete kept his winning momentum going in the next bout as he gutted out a 10-7 win by decision against Seth Holt of Salem (W.Va.). Gabarrete would be pinned by Logan Farnell of UIndy in the semifinals in 4:31, he would then drop a tough 3-2 decision on a riding time point to Alexander Blake of Frostburg State in the third-place bout to take home fourth. 

174 Pounds
- Freshman Colton Lewis (Tarboro, N.C.) received a first-round bye before being pinned in 1:11 by Frostburg State's Duncan Kammar. Lewis then was defeated by fall in 2:24 in his first consolation bout against Andrew Fonseca of Millersville.

197 Pounds
- Freshman Raul Lopez-Aguilar fell by a 17-2 technical fall score to UIndy's Ethan Farnell after receiving a first-round bye. He then was defeated by fall in 1:38 by Bryce Gadson of UNC Pembroke in his first consolation bout.

285 Pounds
- Freshman Seaton Tallent (Dandridge, Tenn.) dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision in sudden victory against Davis & Elkins' Aidan Maldonado in his opener. Tallent received a bye in the first consolation round, then was defeated by Justin Bishop of Fairmont State by a 14-6 major decision.
- Freshman Daniel Silver (Scotland Neck, N.C.) was pinned in 1:22 by UNC Pembroke's Daniel Karmanov in his opening round bout. He was awarded a bye in the first consolation round, before being defeated by fall in 1:44 by Frank Moore of Emmanuel (Ga.) in his next contest.

- Emory & Henry will return to action on Friday, November 7 in a non-conference dual at Division I opponent Virginia Military Institute. First bout is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from Lexington, Virginia.
