UVA Wise Volleyball Downs Emory & Henry, 3-0, Tuesday Night

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Volleyball Team (3-13, 0-7 SAC) dropped a South Atlantic Conference match to Southwest Virginia rival the University of Virginia's College at Wise (9-7, 3-4 SAC) Tuesday evening. The Cavs took the win by scores of 26-24, 25-21 and 25-21.

How It Happened
- The teams were all level at 5-5 early in the first, but the visiting Cavs ripped off six straight and nine out of 10 points to establish a 14-6 advantage. The Wasps battled back and managed to reduce the deficit to four at 17-13. Wise pushed its margin back out to seven at 21-14, but again E&H countered with a 6-0 rally to pull within just a point at 21-20 heading into the deciding part of the set. The Cavaliers reached set point at 24-21, until three straight points by the Wasps evened the frame at 24-24. Wise took advantage of a pair of E&H errors to win the opener by a 26-24 scoreline.
- The Wasps were hot out of the gates to begin the second stanza, taking the opening five points. Emory & Henry held a 12-8 lead, but the Cavaliers came alive as they took eight of the next 10 chances to jump ahead at 16-14. Wise looked on the precipice of taking a two set to none lead at 23-18, but E&H scratched back to make it a contest at 23-21. Back-top-back kills from Mia Poag sealed the 25-21 set win for the visitors, giving them a commanding lead.
- The Cavaliers jumped on the Wasps early in the third set as they ran out to a 12-4 lead early on. E&H continued to fight and pulled back within striking distance at 17-14 through the middle of the frame. A couple quick spurts by Wise gave them set point, and after a pair of scores by the Wasps to close to 24-21, the Cavaliers closed out the match with a kill by Morgan Blankenship to take the set and the match by another 25-21 score.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Sophomore outside hitter Tori Boling (Tega Cay, S.C.) paced the Wasps with a match-high 14 kills and posted her highest hitting percentage of the year at .314. Boling also added seven digs, two service aces and a block for a team-high 16.5 total points. Senior middle Gracyn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.) went for seven kills and five blocks while junior middle Haley Harnichar (Sevierville, Tenn.) added five kills, three blocks and a dig. Senior outside hitter Julissa Hopgood (Lutz, Fla.) had five kills, two blocks and a dig for the Wasps.
- Sophomore setter Zoie Pace (Collinsville, Va.) finished with a team-high 16 assists, five digs and a service ace while senior setter Logan Newberry (Glade Spring, Va.) had 15 assists, two digs and a kill. Freshman libero Gracy Lasig (Knoxville, Tenn.) collected a team-high 16 digs and added four assists.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Blankenship led the Cavaliers with 13 kills, seven digs, four service aces and a pair of blocks while Poag had 13 kills, eight digs, one block, one service ace and an assist. Mable James posted 10 kills and four blocks for Wise in the victory.
- Riley Brandon registered a match-high 38 assists, eight digs, four kills and a pair of blocks for the Cavaliers.

- Emory & Henry is on the road this Saturday, October 11 when the Wasps travel to take on perennial SAC and national power Wingate University. First serve is scheduled for noon from Wingate, North Carolina.
