UVA Wise Women’s Lacrosse Downs Emory & Henry, 18-3, In SAC Rivalry

WISE, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Lacrosse Team (0-2, 0-1 SAC) fell on the road in its South Atlantic Conference opener to Southwest Virginia rival the University of Virginia's College at Wise (2-0, 1-0 SAC) Wednesday afternoon. The Cavaliers established a 13-2 halftime lead and never looked back, as they took the win by an 18-3 final tally.

How It Happened
- The Cavaliers took control early as they recorded the first six goals of the contest in the first seven minutes of play to take the 6-0 lead. The Wasps broke up the run with 7:08 on the clock when senior midfielder Justyce Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.) found graduate student attack Mary Martinez (Estado de Mexico, MEXICO), who buried a shot for her second goal of the season to cut the deficit to 6-1. Wise would add one more goal before the end of the period to push their advantage back out to six goals at 7-1.
- UVA Wise wasted no time, putting up three more goals in the first three minutes of action in the second period. The Cavaliers saw their lead grow to 12-1, but E&H got back on the scoreboard with 3:25 remaining in the half. Sophomore midfielder Whitney Holland (Rocky Mount, Va.) converted a free-position opportunity to reduce the margin to 12-2. Wise tacked on one more score to take a 13-2 lead into the halftime break.
- The third was a low-scoring affair where both teams had difficulty finding the back of the net. Wise registered the first blow at the 8:49 mark, but E&H responded with 4:25 remaining in the frame. Martinez converted a free-position shot of her own to make it 14-3. The Cavaliers had the final say of the quarter, scoring with just 36 seconds left to run the margin out to 15-3 heading into the fourth.
- UVA Wise registered the lone goals of the final quarter, putting up three scores to take the victory by an 18-3 final. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Martinez led the Wasps with two goals on three shots while Holland scored on her lone attempt of the contest, adding a pair of ground balls, causing one turnover and collecting a draw control. Junior defender Megan D'Amore (Mooresville, N.C.) finished with a team-high six ground balls and six caused turnovers, while adding a pair of draw controls. Jones had an assist, five ground balls, a trio of caused turnovers and one draw control.
- Freshman goalie Madison Weaver (Forest, Va.) made nine saves in net for E&H while fellow freshman Ella James (Roanoke, Va.) had three saves in relief.

UVA Wise Individual Leaders
- Abby Schrafft paced the Cavaliers with a game-high four goals. Issie Brown, Logen Davis, Leslie Clay and Caitlyn Schultz all finished with a pair of goals each.
- Addie Donalson and Katie Michaels each worked 30 minutes in net for the Cavaliers. Michaels would earn the win for Wise.

- The Wasps are back on the road this Saturday, February 14 when they travel to take on Davis & Elkins College. First draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Elkins, West Virginia.
