EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Lacrosse Team (2-5) picked up a non-conference win over former Old Dominion Athletic Conference rival Ferrum College (2-7) Wednesday afternoon. The Wasps led the entire way en route to a 12-5 victory over the Panthers.

How It Happened
- The Wasps struck first just over five minutes into the contest when senior midfielder Justyce Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.) converted on a free-position shot to make it 1-0. Junior attack Avery McHargue (Weaverville, N.C.) scored an unassisted goal just 37 seconds later to run the score to 2-0 and sophomore midfielder Whitney Holland (Rocky Mount, Va.) rounded out the first-period scoring unassisted with just 14 seconds on the clock to give E&H a 3-0 advantage at the end of the first.
- Junior attack Bethany Beecher (Roanoke, Va.) joined the scoring party 35 seconds into the second period on an assist from graduate student attack Mary Martinez (Estado de Mexico, MEXICO) to run the Wasps' margin to 4-0. Ferrum finally broke through with a goal at the 11:56 mark, but E&H had a response when Beecher dished to Holland who beat the goalie to make it 5-1. Ferrum reduced the deficit to 5-2, but the Wasps finished the half on a tear as McHargue scored twice more and Jones added her second free-position shot goal of the contest to give E&H an 8-2 lead heading into the halftime break.
- Emory & Henry opened the scoring just 54 seconds into the second half as McHargue found sophomore midfielder Alex Costello (Johnson City, Tenn.) who slotted a shot into the back of the net to make it 9-2. The Panthers finished the period with three consecutive goals to claw back within four at 9-5 heading into the final period of play.
- It was all Wasps in the fourth period as the home team closed things out with three unanswered scores. Costello scored on a helper from Martinez, Jones completed her hat trick on yet another assist from Martinez and McHargue scored her fourth goal of the day on an assist from Beecher to send the Wasps to the 12-5 victory.
Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- McHargue finished with four goals, one assist and a ground ball while Jones added three goals, one helper, five ground balls, three draw controls and six caused turnovers.
- Costello went for two goals, five ground balls, two caused turnovers and a draw control. Holland posted two goals, three ground balls, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Junior defender Megan D'Amore (Mooresville, N.C.) recorded a team-high five draw controls, two ground balls and six caused turnovers.
- Freshman goalie Ella James (Roanoke, Va.) collected five saves, five ground balls and caused a turnover to earn the win in net.
Ferrum Individual Leaders
- Lana Barkovic paced the Panthers with four goals, two ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover while Micaiyah Dickerson added one goal and a pair of assists.
- Ashley Font made six saves in net for the Panthers.
