EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Lacrosse Team (4-8, 1-5 SAC) made more history Wednesday afternoon, earning the first South Atlantic Conference win in program history. The Wasps overcame a late 7-6 deficit, scoring the final four goals of the contest to down Mars Hill University (3-8, 0-7 SAC) by a 10-7 margin.

How It Happened
- The Wasps jumped ahead just under five minutes into the game when graduate student attack Mary Martinez (Estado de Mexico, MEXICO) converted on a free-position shot to make it 1-0. MHU tied things up on a free-position opportunity of its own just under a minute later, but E&H responded at the 8:24 mark when sophomore midfielder Whitney Holland (Rocky Mount, Va.) tallied an unassisted goal to leapfrog back into the lead 2-1. The Lions leveled the match once more on another free-position shot, but Martinez buried a shot on an assist from senior midfielder Justyce Jones (Jacksonville, N.C.) on a player-up chance to give the Wasps a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
- Neither team could find the back of the net through the opening 10 minutes of the second frame, until Mars Hill broke through at the 4:54 mark to knot the score at 3-3. Emory & Henry had an immediate answer just eight seconds later when junior attack Avery McHargue (Weaverville, N.C.) dished to attack Bethany Beecher (Roanoke, Va.) who beat the goalie for a 4-3 lead. Jones increased the Wasps' lead to two at 5-3 on a free-position shot with 3:05 showing on the clock. The Lions had the final say with a goal to cut the deficit to 5-4 at the half.
- The Lions recorded the first goal of the third quarter to tie the game at 5-5 with 11:35 remaining. The third was a low-scoring affair that saw both teams struggling to score, but Jones finally converted on another player-up chance on an assist from sophomore midfielder Alex Costello (Johnson City, Tenn.) to send the game to the final quarter at 6-5 in favor of the Wasps.
- Mars Hill began the fourth quarter on the front foot as the Lions put up a pair of goals in the first 2:17 to take their first lead of the contest at 7-6. The Wasps rallied as Martinez scored on an assist from Jones with 11:51 to play, then McHargue followed at the 6:12 mark unassisted to push the Wasps in front 8-7. Martinez tallied her fourth goal of the game at the 5:19 mark on another assist from Jones and Holland clinched the historic victory with a goal on the player-up advantage on Jones's fourth assist of the contest to run the score to its final at 10-7.

- Martinez finished with four goals, five ground balls and a trio of caused turnovers while Jones collected two goals, four assists, three ground balls, a team-high four draw controls and three caused turnovers.
- Holland contributed two goals, four ground balls, one draw control and a caused turnover. McHargue registered one goal, one assist and three ground balls.
- Junior defender Megan D'Amore (Mooresville, N.C.) led the defense with three ground balls, three draw controls and a game-high five caused turnovers.
- Freshman goalie Ella James (Roanoke, Va.) made 11 saves and picked up five ground balls to earn the win.
Mars Hill Individual Leaders
- Abby Cleveland, Brooklyn Nemitz and Cierra Ledeen all finished with a pair of goals while Reese Wachter added the other score for the Lions.
- Victoria Kaercher tallied eight saves and three ground balls in net for Mars Hill.

- The Wasps are back on the road on Saturday, April 4 when they make the trip to the Palmetto State to take on the Cobras of Coker University. First draw is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. from Hartsville, South Carolina.
