Joe Matthews Tabbed As New Emory & Henry Sports Information Director
EMORY, Va. - A sports information specialist from Lenoir-Rhyne
University has been named Sports Information Director for Emory
& Henry College.
Joe Matthews holds both a bachelor’s degree in sports administration with a minor in communications and a master of business administration degree from Lenoir-Rhyne.
Matthews worked in the Sports Information Department for two years while an undergraduate at Lenoir Rhyne and for two additional years as a graduate assistant. He was given increasing levels of responsibility that included spearheading the redesign of the athletic department website in 2009 and writing and design work in various publications for all of Lenoir-Rhyne’s 17 varsity sports.
He also served one year as assistant sports information director at Carson-Newman College. While there, he worked as the official statistician for football, basketball and many other sports, assisted in the redesign of their athletics department website, wrote and designed media guides and served as the primary media contact for several sports.
E&H Director of Athletics Myra Sims said Matthews brings great enthusiasm along with skills in writing, media relations, web design and sports statistics. “The field of sports information is very heavy on technology and is, therefore, constantly evolving,” Sims said. “Joe understands the technology and will eventually help us to develop new ways of reaching out to the public.”
In addition to his experience at Lenoir-Rhyne and Carson-Newman, Matthews has assisted at various South Atlantic Conference and NCAA Division II Southeast Region tournaments. He assisted in the hosting of regional tournaments for women's basketball and softball at Lenoir-Rhyne in the spring of 2009.
“I am extremely excited to come to Emory & Henry,” says Matthews. “The history and traditions here are rich, and I hope to honor the past while being part of a new era of E&H athletic success.”
