Emory & Henry Women’s Tennis Defeats Misericordia, 5-4, Thursday

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis Team (5-3) picked up a 5-4 win over Misericordia University Thursday afternoon to conclude its schedule of matches over Spring Break. The Wasps went 2-2 and saw several strong performances over the duration of the week.

Misericordia took a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match. E&H's only win coming from sophomore Sheyenne Cleveland (Rural Retreat, Va.) and junior Blair Brabson (Knoxville, Tenn.) as they were victorious by an 8-0 score.

In singles, junior Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) picked up a 7-6, 6-2 win while freshman Taylor Evans (Gate City, Va.) earned a three-set victory at the second singles spot.

The Wasps got a 6-4, 6-2 win from Brabson at number five singles with Cleveland's three-set win at the sixth singles flight (6-4, 7-6 (3)) proving to be the difference maker in the match.

Emory & Henry will next face off against Virginia Wesleyan College and Randolph-Macon College next Saturday as they open Old Dominion Athletic Conference play at Lexington, Va.

=== WEDNESDAY === Assumption 5, Emory & Henry 4

Assumption College was able to bounce back from being down 2-1 after doubles play to defeat Emory & Henry College (3-4) Wednesday afternoon at the Hilton Head Island Motorcoach Resort.

E&H took a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match as junior Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) and freshman Taylor Evans (Gate City, Va.) picked up an 8-6 win at the top flight. Sophomore Sheyenne Cleveland (Rural Retreat, Va.) and junior Casey Blackburn (Richmond, Va.) won by the same 8-6 score at number three doubles.

In singles play, Evans continued her unbeaten streak, winning 6-1, 6-1 at number two. Cleveland was victorious by the same score at the sixth spot.

E&H had several opportunities to win as they fell 9-8 at number two doubles and saw two singles matches go to three sets after easily winning the first frames.

=== TUESDAY === Emory & Henry 9, Regis (Mass.) 0

Emory & Henry College (4-2) got back on the winning track Tuesday with a convincing 9-0 win over Regis (Mass.) College (13-3) at Hilton Head High School. The Wasps have now won three of their last four matches by a 9-0 score.

Junior Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory at number one singles and teamed up with freshman Taylor Evans (Gate City, Va.) to blank their doubles opponent, 8-0. Evans won by the same 6-1, 6-0 margin at the second singles flight.

At number four singles, junior Emily Bolt (Independence, Va.) prevailed by a 6-0, 6-2 margin and junior Blair Brabson (Knoxville, Tenn.) won, (6-1, 6-1), at the fifth slot. Sophomore Sheyenne Cleveland (Rural Retreat, Va.) was perfect in her match at number six singles, winning 6-0, 6-0.

=== MONDAY === John Carroll 6, Emory & Henry 3

John Carroll University swept doubles and picked up a trio of singles wins as it defeated Emory & Henry College (3-2) by a 6-3 score Monday morning at Hilton Head High School.

Junior Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) picked up 6-3, 6-3 win at number one singles while freshman Taylor Evans (Gate City, Va.) kept rolling with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 position.

Freshman Meredith Yeary (Knoxville, Tenn.) claimed the other win for the Wasps, a strong 6-1, 6-1 decision at the third singles flight.
