Emory & Henry Men’s Track And Field Places Third At VMI Team Challenge

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Track & Field Teams continued their indoor seasons at the VMI Team Challenge Saturday. The Wasps men's team picked up wins in two events while the women's team earned a win in one event and tied a program record.

Top Men's Performances

Track
- Junior Barlowe Branch, III (Petersburg, Va.) finished in 14th place in the 200 meters with a time of 23.03 while junior Joshua Black (Woodbridge, Va.) was 16th with his time of 23.28.
- Branch III was 11th in the 400 meters, stopping the clock at 51.30. Junior T.J. Pecina (Hayter's Gap, Va.) placed 16th in 54.00 and junior Christopher Smalls (Dumfries, Va.) was 18th with a 55.29.
- Junior Gavin Kegler (Woodbridge, Va.) recorded a fifth-place finish in the 600 meters, finishing in 1:25.35. Junior Cody Pecina (Hayter's Gap, Va.) was hot on his heels in sixth with his 1:26.24.
- Senior Miles Baldwin (Willis, Va.) led a pack of Wasps in the mile, finishing fourth in 4:31.36. Junior Davis Norman's (Salem, Va.) 4:32.89 was good enough for sixth while senior Samuel Tindall (Fort Defiance, Va.) and sophomore Hayden Pugh (Louisa, Va.) placed seventh and ninth respectively.
- Junior Aidan Trautman (Centreville, Md.) recorded a top-ten finish in eighth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:36.27. Freshman J.T. Moore (Chilhowie, Va.) finished 11th in 9:43.37.
- Trautman placed second in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 16:44.67 while senior Tommy Henzey, IV's (Salem, Va.) 17:57.26 put him in the fifth slot.
- The Distance Medley Relay team of Norman, Kegler, Tindall and Baldwin took home first place, finishing in 11:16.84.

Field
- Junior Joseph Ihlenburg (Roanoke, Va.) put up a height of 1.75 meters in the high jump to finish in sixth place.
- Ihlenburg's leap of 6.46 meters was good enough for seventh place in the long jump.
- Freshman Brock Ayers (Austinville, Va.) registered a toss of 13.52 meters in the shot put to finish fifth while classmate Phillip Radford's (Riner, Va.) throw of 13.02 meters put him in sixth.
- Junior Drew Craft (Covington, Va.) posted a jump of 13.57 meters to place fifth in the triple jump while freshman TaiShaun Cooks' (Forest, Va.) distance of 13.25 meters put him in sixth place.
- Senior Gavin Lee (North Tazewell, Va.) earned yet another medalist honor in his storied E&H career, as he put up a distance of 16.74 meters to win the weight throw. Sophomore Malik Guadelupe (Woodbridge, Va.) was fifth with 13.52 meters, Ayers was sixth with 12.47 meters and Radford was eight with 12.38 meters.

Women's Top Performances

Track
- Sophomore Aiyana Blakey (Woodbridge, Va.) was 24th in the 200 meters with a time of 27.57.
- Senior Madison Ricketts (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished in 17th in the 400 meters with a 1:12.79 while sophomore Abby Harris (Powell, Tenn.) placed 18th in 1:13.30.
- Sophomore Tess Somervell (Chilhowie, Va.) collected fifth in the 600 meters, stopping the watches in 1:43.68.
- The mile saw junior Kennedy Harris (Mineral, Va.) place 10th in 5:35.98 while junior McKenzie Tate (Wytheville, Va.) was 19th in 6:03.82.
- Freshman Lilia Yanez (El Paso, Texas) finished 22nd in the 3,000 meters with her 13:04.84.
- Senior Elise McKinney (Church Hill, Tenn.) led a trio of Wasps in the 5,000 meters as she took home first place with her time of 22:08.41. Freshman Violet Riddle (Johnson City, Tenn.) was second in 22:46.92 while junior Hannah Rosen's (Falls Church, Va.) 24:06.04 slotted her into third place.
- The Distance Medley Relay Team of Harris, Somervell, Tate and junior Maya Turner (Midland, Va.)  finished second with their time of 14:06.36.

Field
- Sophomore Mia Spangler (Floyd, Va.) and senior Alyssa Chappell (Church Hill, Tenn.) finished in a tie for 10th in the high jump with a height of 1.45 meters.
- Spangler picked up a ninth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.22 meters, tying her own program record. Chappell was 13th with her 4.86 meter leap.
- Senior Taylorann Cash (Buena Vista, Va.) put up a toss of 9.69 meters to place 12th in the shot put. Senior Catie Leonard (Gray, Tenn.) was 16th with her throw of 8.70 meters.
- Spangler was fifth in the triple jump, recording a distance of 10.75 meters.
- Freshman Chloe Spence (Riner, Va.) finished 12th in the weight throw with a distance of 11.33 meters. Leonard was 15th and Cash was 17th with their throws of 10.09 meters and 9.53 meters respectively.

- Emory & Henry is back in action next Sunday, January 25 when they travel to compete in the ASICS Superblast Invitational at the JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C.
